Nina — visiting Iowa for the first time
Ben — grew up in Iowa
Nina looked out the car window and blinked.
“Ben…” she said slowly, “that is a lot of corn.”
Ben laughed. “Welcome to Iowa.”
“I thought people were joking about the corn.”
“Nope,” Ben said proudly. “In Iowa, corn is basically a celebrity.”
The two friends drove along a quiet country road with tall green fields on both sides.
“I feel like the corn is watching us,” Nina said.
Ben nodded seriously. “It probably is.”
Nina burst out laughing.
The Iowa State Fair
Their first stop was Des Moines, the capital city. Ben brought Nina to the famous Iowa State Fair.
The fairgrounds were full of music, food, rides, and people carrying giant snacks.
A crowd gathered around something inside a glass case.
“What is everyone looking at?” Nina asked.
Ben smiled. “The butter cow.”
“The what?”
“The butter cow. It’s a cow sculpture made completely out of butter.”
Nina stared silently for a moment.
“Iowa is amazing,” she finally said.
Food Bigger Than Expected
As they walked around the fair, Nina noticed something unusual.
“Why is all the food on sticks?”
Ben pointed around proudly.
“Pork chops on sticks. Corn dogs. Cheesecake on sticks. Iowa believes food should be portable.”
Nina shook her head. “This state has solved problems nobody else was trying to solve.”
They both laughed.
Small Towns and Friendly People
The next day, they visited a small Iowa town.
People waved at them from porches and sidewalks.
“Do they know us?” Nina whispered.
“No,” Ben answered. “People are just friendly here.”
At a local diner, an older waitress called everyone “hon.”
Nina ordered a giant slice of homemade pie.
After one bite, she closed her eyes dramatically.
“If I stay here too long,” she said, “I may become emotionally attached to pie.”
Ben nodded. “That happens.”
Nature and Quiet Beauty
Later, they visited Maquoketa Caves State Park. Nina was surprised to see forests, cliffs, and caves.
“I didn’t know Iowa had places like this,” she admitted.
“Most people think Iowa is only farms,” Ben said. “But there’s actually a lot of natural beauty here.”
That evening, they sat near a peaceful field while the sun slowly set.
The sky turned orange and pink above the rolling land.
“It’s so quiet,” Nina said.
“That’s one thing people love about Iowa,” Ben replied. “Life feels slower here.”
One Final Surprise
Before Nina left, Ben took her to see the famous Field of Dreams baseball field.
“This is from the movie, right?” Nina asked.
“Yep.”
The field sat quietly among the cornfields.
Nina smiled. “Honestly, Iowa feels kind of magical.”
Ben grinned. “The corn told you that, didn’t it?”
Nina laughed. “Yes. The corn and the butter cow.”
As they drove away, Nina looked out the window one more time.
She had expected Iowa to be boring.
Instead, she found friendly people, funny traditions, peaceful landscapes, and some of the best pie she had ever eaten.
And somehow… she knew she would miss it.
