🎯 Grammar Basics: Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Use comparatives to compare two things and superlatives to compare three or more.

  • Comparatives: add -er or use more + adjective

    • Bigfoot is hairier than a bear.

    • This forest is more mysterious than the other one.

  • Superlatives: add -est or use most + adjective

    • Bigfoot is the hairiest creature in the legend.

    • This is the most mysterious story about Bigfoot.

🎯 Grammar Extension: Comparative Adjectives

Use -er (with "than" if comparing two things) when the adjective is:

1️⃣ One syllable

  • tall → taller

  • fast → faster

  • cold → colder

Example: My car is faster than yours.

2️⃣ Two syllables ending in -y → Change -y to -i and add -er

  • happy → happier

  • busy → busier

  • early → earlier

Example: She’s busier this week than last week.

Use “more” (with "than") when the adjective is:

3️⃣ Two syllables (not ending in -y)

  • modern → more modern

  • peaceful → more peaceful

  • honest → more honest

Example: This hotel is more modern than the last one.

4️⃣ Three or more syllables

  • intelligent → more intelligent
