Lesson 5: Kush and Aksum (Kingdoms of the Nile)
ποΈ The Geography of Early Nubia
π The Land of Nubia
Nubia was south of Egypt, along the Nile River. It had rocky hills and deserts. It also had gold, iron, and rich farmland. This made it an important land for trade and power.
π Early Civilization in Nubia
People lived in small villages and used the Nile for fishing, farming, and travel. They also traded with Egypt. Over time, a powerful kingdom called Kush rose in Nubia.
π Fun Fact: The word βNubiaβ may come from the Egyptian word for gold β thatβs how much gold they had!
π€ Kush and Egypt
βοΈ Egyptβs Conquest of Kush
Around 1500 BCE, Egypt became stronger and took over Kush. For hundreds of years, the Kushites followed Egyptian religion, writing, and customs. They built temples and dressed like Egyptians.
π Fun Story: Some Kushite kings even called themselves βPharaohβ and wore the Egyptian crown β even though they werenβt Egyptian!
π A Change in Power
After Egypt weakened, the Kushites took their land back. Then, around 700 BCE, Kushite kings went further β they conquered Egypt!
ποΈ The Kushite Dynasty
King Piankhi led the Kushite army into Egypt and took control. He and his family ruled Egypt as the 25th Dynasty. They tried to bring back old Egyptian ways.
π Cool Fact: These black African pharaohs built pyramids in Nubian style β tall and narrow!
π₯ The End of Kushite Rule
Later, the Assyrians invaded Egypt and pushed the Kushites back to Nubia. The Kushite dynasty in Egypt ended, but their kingdom in Nubia remained strong.
π¨ Later Kush
π Kushβs Iron Industry
The capital city of Kush, called MeroΓ«, became a center for making iron tools and weapons. They used iron to make farming tools, which helped grow more food.
π Fun Fact: MeroΓ« was full of smoke from furnaces β it looked like a busy, ancient factory city!
π The Expansion of Trade
Kush traded gold, iron, ivory, and leopard skins with people from Africa, the Middle East, and even India. They got fine cloth, glass, and jewels in return.
π Kushite Culture
Even though they learned a lot from Egypt, the Kushites had their own writing, art, and gods. Their writing system is still not fully understood today!
πΊ New Discoveries
Archaeologists found many pyramids in Nubia β more than in Egypt! They also found temples and homes in MeroΓ« that show a rich culture.
π©β𦱠Women in Kushite Society
Women in Kush had important roles. Some were queens or even rulers. One famous queen was Queen Amanirenas, who fought the Romans and protected her land.
π Amazing Story: Queen Amanirenas lost an eye in battle, but she still led her people and made peace with Rome β a true warrior queen!
π The Decline of Kush
π The Influence of Aksum
To the southeast, a new kingdom called Aksum (in modern-day Ethiopia) became rich and powerful. They took over Kushβs trade routes and became a new power in the region.
ποΈ The Decline of Kush
As Aksum grew, Kush became weaker. Trade slowed, and the iron industry faded. By about 350 CE, the kingdom of Kush came to an end.
π Fun Fact: Even though Kush disappeared, the pyramids and temples in Nubia still stand today β proof of a strong and proud kingdom!
