Olivia — visiting Kansas for the first time
Jake — grew up in Kansas
Olivia looked out the car window.
“Jake... where are the mountains?”
Jake smiled. “Wrong state.”
Olivia laughed. “I thought maybe one little mountain was hiding somewhere.”
“No,” Jake said. “Kansas likes big skies instead.”
They drove along a quiet highway with fields stretching to the horizon.
“It feels like I can see forever,” Olivia said.
“That’s one of the best things about Kansas,” Jake replied. “The sunsets are amazing because the sky is so wide.”
The Sunflower State
Soon they stopped beside a field of bright yellow flowers.
“So many sunflowers!” Olivia said.
“Kansas is called The Sunflower State,” Jake explained. “They grow wild all over the state.”
Olivia smiled.
“I think these flowers are all looking at us.”
Jake laughed.
“They're probably wondering why you're taking so many pictures.”
A Piece of History
Next, they visited Dodge City.
“Was this really the Wild West?” Olivia asked.
“It sure was,” Jake said. “Long ago, cowboys, cattle drives, and lawmen filled these streets.”
They watched a fun cowboy show.
After the show, Olivia put on a cowboy hat.
“How do I look?”
Jake looked at her for a moment.
“You look ready to guard a herd of... very confused cows.”
Olivia laughed and tipped her hat.
Kansas City Barbecue
Later, they crossed into the Kansas side of Kansas City.
The smell of barbecue filled the air.
Jake ordered ribs, brisket, and baked beans.
Olivia stared at the table.
“Are we feeding ten people?”
“No,” Jake said. “Just two hungry travelers.”
After dinner, Olivia leaned back in her chair.
“I don't think I need breakfast tomorrow.”
Jake nodded.
“That means the barbecue was successful.”
The Tallgrass Prairie
The next morning, they visited the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
The wind moved through the tall grass like waves on the ocean.
Bison grazed peacefully in the distance.
“I never knew grass could be this beautiful,” Olivia said quietly.
“Most people think Kansas is just flat,” Jake replied. “But it has a beauty that grows on you.”
One Final Surprise
As they drove home, the evening sky turned orange, pink, and purple.
Olivia looked out the window.
“I thought Kansas would be boring.”
Jake smiled.
“And now?”
“Now I understand why people love it,” she said. “It has history, friendly people, great barbecue, beautiful prairies... and enough sky for everyone.”
Jake grinned.
“And don't forget the sunflowers.”
Olivia laughed.
“How could I? I think they're still watching me.”
The two friends smiled as the sun slowly disappeared below the endless Kansas horizon.
