Characters

  • Emily — visiting Louisiana for the first time

  • Noah — grew up in Louisiana

Emily stepped out of the car and looked around.

“Wow! I can already hear music.”

Noah smiled. “Welcome to New Orleans. Around here, music is almost everywhere.”

As they walked through the French Quarter, a trumpet began to play on a nearby street corner.

Emily laughed.

“Did someone know we were coming?”

“No,” Noah said. “That's just a normal day here.”

The French Quarter

They walked past colorful buildings with iron balconies covered in flowers.

“This doesn't look like other American cities,” Emily said.

“It isn't,” Noah replied. “Louisiana has French, Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences. That's what makes it so unique.”

Emily stopped to listen to a jazz band.

“I think my feet want to dance.”

“In Louisiana,” Noah laughed, “that happens a lot.”

Trying Louisiana Food

At lunch, Noah ordered gumbo and jambalaya.

Emily looked at the menu.

“So... how spicy is it?”

Noah smiled.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On how brave you are.”

Emily took a bite.

Her eyes grew wide.

“Oh... it's spicy!”

Noah laughed.

“Congratulations! You're having the full Louisiana experience.”

Into the Swamp

The next morning, they took a boat tour through a swamp.

Tall cypress trees rose from the water, and moss hung from their branches.

Suddenly, the guide pointed toward the shore.

“Alligator!”

Emily jumped.

“It looks huge!”

The alligator stayed perfectly still.

“I think he's taking a nap,” Noah said.

Emily laughed.

“I've never been so nervous about something sleeping.”

A Sweet Surprise

Before leaving, Noah took Emily to a famous café.

He ordered beignets, warm fried pastries covered with powdered sugar.

Emily picked one up.

The first bite sent powdered sugar onto her shirt.

Noah tried not to laugh.

“Well,” he said, “now you officially look like you've been to New Orleans.”

Emily looked down at her clothes and started laughing too.

“I think I wore more sugar than I ate!”

Heading Home

As they drove away, Emily looked out the window.

“I thought Louisiana would just be good food.”

“And now?” Noah asked.

“It's music, history, amazing food, beautiful swamps, friendly people... and probably the only place where an alligator can scare you before breakfast and powdered sugar can surprise you after.”

Noah laughed.

“That sounds like Louisiana.”

Emily smiled.

“I'll definitely be back. But next time... I'll bring a napkin.”
