Part 2: The Taxi Ride (Tom’s First Day in America)

Listen - Audio

Tom goes outside the airport.
He sees many yellow cars.
“Taxi! Taxi!” people shout.

Tom raises his hand. A taxi stops.
“Hello!” says Tom.
“Hello,” says the taxi driver. “Where to?”

Tom looks at his paper.
He wants to go to Main Street Hotel.
He says, “Please take me to Mango Street.”

“Mango Street?” says the driver.
“Yes, Mango Street!” says Tom.
“Okay!” says the driver.

The taxi goes fast.
They stop in front of a fruit shop.
Big sign: Mango World.
“Here we are!” says the driver.

Tom looks around. He sees mangoes.
He sees more mangoes.
He sees only mangoes!

“This is not my hotel,” says Tom.
“This is fruit!”

The driver laughs. “You said Mango Street!”
“Oh no!” says Tom. “I need Main Street!”

The driver nods. “Ah, Main Street Hotel!”
They both laugh.
Tom buys a big mango anyway.
He eats it in the taxi.
“Delicious,” says Tom.
“Next stop, the real hotel,” says the driver.
