Thanksgiving Story (Learn English and About American Culture)
Sarah had lived in the United States for only six months. She came from South Korea to study at a university in Ohio. One day in November, her roommate Emily said,
“Sarah, do you want to come to my house for Thanksgiving?”
Sarah had heard of Thanksgiving before, but she didn’t know much about it. “What do people do on Thanksgiving?” she asked.
Emily smiled. “We eat a big meal with our family and give thanks for what we have. It’s one of the most American holidays!”
Sarah agreed to go. On Thursday morning, Emily’s family picked them up and drove two hours to a small town. When they arrived, the smell of food filled the house—roast turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, and pumpkin pie.
Emily’s grandmother hugged Sarah warmly. “Welcome, dear! There’s always room for one more at our table.”
Before they ate, everyone stood around the table and said what they were thankful for. Sarah listened as each person spoke about family, health, and good friends. When it was her turn, she said softly, “I’m thankful for new friends who make me feel at home.” Everyone smiled and clapped.
After dinner, they watched football on TV and played board games. Sarah noticed how everyone laughed, teased each other, and helped clean up together. She realized that Thanksgiving was not just about food—it was about connection.
That night, as she lay in bed, Sarah thought, Maybe this is what people mean when they talk about the American spirit—family, friendship, and being grateful for what you have.
